This is your moment, Rockies fans of Denver, indigent or otherwise, and you now have eight days to celebrate before the World Series. A team as hot as Colorado might not relish such a lengthy layoff, but its fans certainly will. That's plenty of time for zany radio personalities to record a Rockies rap, for every man, woman and child to purchase a 'Rocktober' T-shirt, for an opportunistic distillery to hurry out a Tulo-Whiskey. After all, this is the first time this city will host a World Series; the Rockies made the playoffs only once before, in 1995, but lost in the first round. And it's not like fans had time to prepare this season. As late as mid-September, the Rockies looked to be destined for a .500 finish and most in the metro area had turned their thoughts to the Broncos. To wit: For the first game of the win streak, September 16th against the Marlins, only 19,121 showed up at Coors Field. To track the attendance numbers is to watch a city stir to life, from curiosity to hope to belief: 23,000 for the Dodgers, then 26,0000, then, after that magical road trip, up to 46,000 for the final Arizona series and 48,000 for the one-game playoff versus San Diego. Bandwagon? Sure. But that's one hell of a bandwagon.

I Agree, It Would Be Quite Pleasant

In the places where baseball is most magical -- the Cactus League, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, and a handful of other lucky cities -- the approach to the cathedrals where the games are played is something of a pilgrimage. You start walking from far away and as you draw closer to the park, streams and currents of other fans begin marching with you, and the next thing you know you're swept up in a wave of shared experience that sweeps you in through the gates and into your seat.

After years of absence, baseball as a presence has returned to Denver, Colorado, and it's terrible indeed -- as crazy as this city has gone in the past for their Broncos and their Avs, there remains still even among those whose activity as baseball fans has long been dormant a vague awareness that baseball has a greater significance. Football and hockey and basketball are marvelous but ever-changing and hardly recognizable from the forms they were played in even 25 years ago; baseball is more the same than ever. I don't know to what degree most of the fans at Coors Field tonight could articulate these concerns. I do know at several points during the contest this evening the crowd seemed for all the world to will the team to an NLCS sweep; no one had any interest in returning for another game Wednesday night, as wonderful an experience as every home playoff game has been so far. Rockies fans might not get all the details yet -- the rather crude group of enthusiastic but recent converts behind me couldn't stop talking about how Matt Herges had "done it for us all year" when Herges only threw 10 innings for Colorado before August 1st. But they do understand that the team is in the middle of something utterly unique and ineffable, something delicate -- were the Rockies to fail to take care of business on this night, the magic could be over like that. And that would be a shame, because on the whole I think it would be quite pleasant to win the World Series.

Dirty Laundry "What Now?"

But I have to wonder what the heck happened with Steve Pederson. He turned things around in a hurry at Pittsburgh. EVERYONE wanted him here when Bill Byrne escaped for Texas A&M (and if he survives that mess, whoa, look out). Trev Alberts went on local and national television demanding Pederson get hired as AD. He was a native Nebraskan. He was on Osborne's staff. He's in one of the pictures from one of the 1990's National Championship teams. To me, Pederson always looked like the type of guy who if you shook hands with him, you'd have to check to make sure you still had 5 fingers. I could never find one reason to trust the guy, even though I don't blame him for firing that lush Solich. But now this guy's legacy is the way he botched the Solich firing. How he botched the search for a new head coach. How he hired a damaged goods coach who just as well have showed up to the job interview dressed as Little Bo Peep.

In other words, Pederson's legacy will forever be that he himself destroyed the once dominate and elite Nebraska football program.

My point is that we don't necessarily need an athletic director or head coach with Nebraska ties...but rather an athletic director or coach that truly embraces Nebraska.

Would Tom Osborne be the right man to be athletic director, at least in the interim? Right now, he would seem to be the logical choice and he's earned the right to this position. Nobody is more qualified to analyze the Nebraska football program and select the next head coach.

I understand that I have been a bit negligent in my analysis of Husker football (or what is left of it lately.) But you can easily excuse me when I have the Rockies as a welcome item to focus my attention. Lord knows the Broncos won't do that this season.

Oppression

Yesterday was Citiprayer it was interesting. God spoke to me I think. The theme for the prayer session was overcoming oppression. The first thing that I said when I heard the theme was that it sounds way too spiritual. It conjured up images of lots of shouting and 'warfare' and the like. However, I think God corrected me. What is wrong with too spiritual? Too often I don't live my life nearly spiritual enough! We must be people who 'walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh.'

So I began to think about what oppression is. I don't know how you would define it, but it seems to me that anything that is abnormally interfering with our daily pursuit of Christ is oppression. Anything that sucks our focus off of chasing Him. For me this could be finances, my health, day to day thoughts of insecurity and doubt. For you they could be relational, financial, spiritual, physical or something else entirely. These are attacks - things that are being brought against you in an attempt to really mess you up.

What I realized in my life is that I am not quick enough to recognize those things in a spiritual context. What I do very quickly is chalk these things up and then line them up with things that I am doing wrong in my life. (Which is valid. For example my finances are easy to attack, because I am horrible with my money.) However, this initial reaction is terribly, terribly dangerous! Because as soon as I start identifying my life problems as something that I am doing incorrectly, I will begin to identify the solutions as something that I can do correctly.

This is a trap of the enemy. And, for me at least, it works far too often. I take all of my life's problems and issues diagnose them and then begin to prescribe myself medication. I set up a system that I am going to follow (for a week) I make a renewed commitment to disciplining myself, etc, etc, etc. Oftentimes I do this without praying about them. Not because I want to cut God out of the deal, but because "I know what He will say." HA! This is SO DANGEROUS! We/I cut ourselves off from the SOURCE of the grace, mercy, wisdom and love that we need to get through something.

We must continue to pray for perspective. God is the Creator of Heaven and Earth. He is All-Knowing, All-Powerful and All-Merciful. He can handle any problem that we have. He is big enough. But on the flip side He is also the God that humbled Himself became flesh and dwelt among us. There is no detail about our life that is too small for Him to be interested in or care about. God, help me.

Well, here it is 10/1/2007. This is a journal entry post. I believe in recognizing and marking transition points in my life. What that means is that I watch for a 'rally point' to focus on, at least for a moment or two. Most of the time this simply means that I am focused or disciplined for a day or two. Every once in a while it actually marks a point in my life where something actually changed significantly. You see, I am a great starter, but not always great (or even competent) at seeing something through. But you know what else? That doesn't damage my vigor for starting one more time.

Things are changing in my life. God seems to have opened some doors for some significant changes in my life. However, like most things that God brings into my world, there of course is the option to not walk it out. It seems that God will open a window of opportunity for you at certain times. These may be times of extended grace, clarified vision, accelerated results or just extraordinary peace and comfort - sometimes there is some of everything. Honestly, I want some of everything right now. Which is exciting because I feel one of those times is upon me.

There are things that I want out of my life. Things that I have wrestled with for a long time. Health issues, pride issues, heart issues, relational issues - issues that I want out of my world. There are things that I want in my life - clarity of my role, further development of the character God is building in my life, joy, excitement, motivation, inspiration, vision.

What is so cool about God is that He is always excited and interested in my life. That seems self-motivated, but it just trips me out most of the time. He is so big. I am so small and yet . . . I mean the world to Him.

God use this time for whatever you want to. I submit myself fully to Your leading. God get in my heart and rearrange things. Lead me, guide me, change me. God I want to glorify You. So be glorified in my heart. amen

Little Bit of Everything

Tonight was a good night. Great softball game. It was back and forth and back and forth with a pretty decent team and we managed to hold onto the win by two! I was 2/2 with a walk and scored all 3 times. I am pleased with my swing recently, also I am pleased with my running. I feel like I am starting to eke back into shape. That is good. I will be working out more soon.

Then, I had to say goodbye to one of my closest friends, Christina. She is heading to LA for a year of YWAM where she is going to completely immerse herself in the Bible. I am very proud of her, but sad to see her leave.

Tomorrow is Wednesday, which excites me. I like Wednesdays!

This is My Favorite Time of Year

Last night was one of my holidays! I woke up from my afternoon, post-football nap and walked outside enroute to my friends' house for a rousing game of Monopoly (oh, I despise the grip that game has on my heart!) As I walked outside I was immediately immersed in joy. I was cold.

As I slowly realized what this meant, I turned right back through the door that I had just passed through and then broke into a sprint for the second hanger on the right side of my closet. It was hoodie time!

Pure ecstasy washed over me as I placed the well-worn, blue zip-up garment displaying my interest in the Chicago Bears on my back. As I then proceeded to my car, I realized that it is here. Fall is here. Football is here. This is my time of year. I wish I could describe it in more detail, but hopefully you catch it as I have. I feel bad for all of you on the West Coast or in the south, Fall is where it is at.

Random Evening

Honestly, I don't know exactly what I am thinking/feeling right now. I feel some awkwardness. This is natural since I am in a transition. (Tomorrow I start at Orchard Road full time.) It is exceptionally weird for me since I am fairly socially sensitive. i want to know where I 'fit in.' Right now, I am having to meet a bunch of new people and begin relationships. That is fun and exciting. But I am a person who prefers comfort and routine. This is all new.

(Listening to: Phil Wickman: Self-titled upon Sean's recommendation; love the style, will listen to for the next couple of days to pick up lyrics and feel. It is relaxed, but not boring. Definitely chill/work to music. Maybe worshipful, don't know.)

Something I am currently learning/noticing in my life is that I do not like to be criticized. (All the people who know me at all are chuckling to themselves and rolling their eyes right now.) But seriously, I don't like it at all. It makes me want to launch into people with my mouth and let them have it. Automatically. That is not right. I need God to take that from me. It is ego, stubbornness and ego. Lord, help me.

Finally, did you know that I have used the same deodorant everyday since 2002? It is true. Old Spice High Endurance Deodorant Mountain Rush. Everyday. I do not get anything else. I do not think about getting anything else. I do not want anything else. That is that.

Also, I don't have to be at the office until 7:45ish now. That is awesome. I will probably feel like I am sleeping in all the time.

So, I have now gone to the doctor to have him look at my hand. Guess what? I have a hairline fracture in my fourth (ring) metacarpal bone in my hand. It is a weird bone to have a fracture in because it is right in the middle of my hand. The doctor told me that there wasn't much we can do about it, except wait. However, he told me that it could very easily turn in a break (like shown above) or the bone could just shatter if I continued to play softball, specifically hit softballs with a bat. If this were to happen it would almost certainly mean surgery on my right hand. This is not an appealing option to me, so I will be forfeiting most of my fall softball season, until I get the free and clear from my doctor. Hopefully in 4-6 weeks. So, I am on the DL. Suck!

I Can Outpunk an 9 Year Old

Ok, funny story happened last night. I hope that I can do it justice. Last night I had a group picnic with the worship team. It was a gorgeous night and they held it at the park right down the street from my house, so I was able to just walk down there. It is always fun to just hang out at a park with some friends!

Now to the fun part. I was horsing around with a couple of the kids there. When out of no where this other kid, from our group, probably 9 or 10, comes walking up and kicks this other kid in the shin really hard. (They are about the same size, so it was alright.) So I start messing with this new-comer and playfully kickbox at his shin. Well, at the first slight contact this dude throws himself on the ground and starts crying. It was a total soccer-player move. All of us just froze and watched him. Everyone realizing that this kid is psycho. So after about 10 seconds of this madness, he gets up and dramatically limps away to see his mom.

So I move on and am now standing off to the side talking to a friend, when POW! This kid has come back and grabbed a handful of ice and plowed me in the back with it. His eyes are all crazy and he is seriously mad. So, I do the mature thing and reach down grab some ice and start pitching it back at him.

This goes on for a minute, escalating as these things usually do. Until I get serious with him and peg him, hard, with a golfball size piece of ice in his left calf. This time he goes down, gripping his leg and is now in pain. So, again, I do the adult thing and peg his other leg.

Now he slowly gets up with murder in his eyes. And walks away, doesn't even stop at at the picnic shelter and heads straight to his family's van.

That's right. I am a bigger punk than a 9 year old.

Here are some stats I dug up after being tipped by Denis Prager.

This is a comparison of the three home run kings and how they did it.

Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs over 22 seasons in 8398 at bats. This averages out to 32.45 a year and 1 home run every 11.77 at bats.

Hank Aaron hit 755 home runs over 23 seasons in 12364 at bats. This averages out to 32.83 a year and 1 home run every 16.38 at bats.

Barry Bonds has hit 757 home runs (so far) over 22 seasons in 9777 at bats. This averages out to 34.41 a year and 1 home run every 12.92 at bats.

These are interesting numbers to me. The Babe was great! 1 home run every 11 at bats! That is astounding and he was consistent over 22 years when medicine was not nearly as advanced as it is now. He drank, cussed, chewed and definitely went with women who did the same! He is the Bambino. For ever. I am going to try and dig up some Babe Ruth stories (that are appropriate for my blog) and get them up. He was truly a legend!

New Opportunity!

Today I accepted a new position at Orchard Road Christian Center as the admin for their Catalyst Student Ministries Department! I start two weeks from tomorrow. I am fired up to be a part of a burgeoning student ministries that works with youth, young adults as well as full-time interns. This is a great opportunity for me to continue walking in what God has for me. I am excited and I am sure that I will post more later!

One of the great successes of the Starbucks franchise is that they have succeeded, not just in marketing a product, but an image and possibly even a community.
Starbucks is one of the few major companies that is fairly lenient about giving away their products. If you know someone who works at a Starbucks, chances are, you’ve received a free drink at one point or another. While this seems counter-productive to the more pragmatically minded folks, it actually makes great sense because when someone sees you walking around with the famously branded cup with a smile on your face, they’re going to want a coffee drink they didn’t realize they were craving until they saw yours.

Starbucks furnishes their facilities with comfortable couches and chairs and music. In other words, they’re not just selling a product, they’re selling an atmosphere. What’s interesting is that they are selling an atmosphere that is both welcoming and a bit intimidating. How many people knew what a “Barista” was before the Starbucks invasion? They use their own language and expect you to adapt, knowing that once you do, you’ll feel like part of the “in” crowd and the experience will be all the more meaningful to you.

In other words, while maintaining a welcoming environment, part of the appeal of the Starbucks experience is that they are (or were) “other,” they used words that other people didn’t use and they were making drinks that (at one time), no one else was. Instead of dumbing things down to make them mor “accesible,” Starbucks understood that part of the allure was the sense of being a bit different. Of course that no longer holds true as there is nearly a Starbucks or copycat on every corner, but Starbucks has, at least in a sense, helped set the standard for this trend.
As far-fetched as it might initially sound, I’m becoming convinced that part of what the success of Starbucks teaches us is that there is a balance between being “other” and welcoming. It does not have to be one or the other.

Last week the Rockies played extremely well at home in a very important homestand. With the division leading Padres and Dodgers in town, it was important for us to win some games, both to make a strong advance in the division, as well as continue to develop confidence that we are a team that can win.

Out of the 6 games played (Friday night's game was rained out) we took 4. That was very strong for us! We ended the week 3.5 out of first. Last night we took the first game from the Devil Rays as the Giants and the D-Backs helped our cause by dropping the Padres and the Dodgers. We wake up this morning still 3.5 our (Arizona has now assumed the division lead) BUT I feel very confident that the D-Backs will hit a slide here shortly and drop fully out of contention. Leaving us to fight out the division with LA and San Diego.

The main thing that would help us is consistent victories on the road. But, if you know the Rockies at all, that is not something we do very well. Bad Altitude has this:

As of right now, the Rockies are 30-21 at home (which projects to 48-33 assuming they are relevant enough to need to make up every lost game) and 23-30 (35-46) on the road. Which leads me to conclude: Nothing has changed. Humidor or not, the team still leaves its confidence behind whenever it ventures outside of the Mountain Time Zone. Hey, I can relate, I feel the same way sometimes, but if I were a ball club I assure you I would have won more than one playoff game in my lifetime. Sometimes you just have to buck up and go with your fears (just like in Batman Begins, which is what I watched for the first time during the rainout Friday night).

Despite the fact that the humidor has had the intended effect of making offensive and pitching statistics from games at Coors slightly more adherent to realities elsewhere (and really, as I've argued many times before, trends in ballpark construction have made Coors-like conditions rather more the rule than the exception, see Houston, Cincinnati, Arizona, Philadelphia, and so on) the Rockies still have a crisis of confidence when it comes to taking care of business on road trips. It seems to me like the obvious solution to this problem is a manager with more authority to lead than Clint "405-487" Hurdle, but look what happened the last time the Rockies hired a manager with genuine gravitas -- Jim Leyland lasted one miserable year. Just long enough to earn our eternal hatred but not quite long enough to impress upon the players that whether or not Coors Field has mystical powers, it's the players' responsibility to go win series in Phoenix and San Diego and Washington too.

So what else can I say other than what I've been repeating all year? Until the Rockies can put together a team capable of going .500 on the road, they're not legit. After the day off today, Colorado will confront clubs in Atlanta and Florida that are not any qualititatively better than their own. Maybe now is their time, but the tremendous weight of past history leaves me skeptical.

Last night David Elijah Budd was born. He is gorgeous. (I will try to get a pic up later.) He is small, as most new-borns are, 5 pounds 10 ounces. It was interesting to be there and just look at him. One of the siblings made a comment that impacted me, "It is amazing how much you can love someone so much when they just came into the world."

It was an honor to be able to see the baby. They allowed me to hold him and bless him.

There isn't a lot to say except that children are a blessing. Thank you God.

One of my good friends from back in St. Joseph, Patrick Evenson, recently posted this on Myspace. I am very proud of him and I wish him all the best!

Here's the news people - I joined the United States Marines.

For the past 3 weeks since I enlisted I have been kinda hesitant of actually telling everyone. Even though most of the people I've told have been pretty supportive, and excited, a big part of me would like to keep ahold of the present as long as possible. These next 3 months will be the last of this part of my life. Even though I'm excited about moving onto something greater, I will miss St. Joe, the people I've grown to love, the life I've come to know, and in many ways my young innocence.

I think the biggest question people have is my motive of making a huge decision like this. It's the last thing anyone would think I'd sanely make at this time of my life. Even though I am bored with life and where I'm at right now, this isn't a "early middle aged crisis". Just a life changing moment.

The truth is that I've just turned 27, I have amazing friends (which you can visit through myspace) but I feel I haven't made much effort and strides in my professional life. I'm not going to list off the things I don't have, but personally I know I can do much better and be a much bigger man.

I have my entire life to live. I have no family, no girlfriend, no big financial obligations, just a ton of wishes and wants and dreams and ambitions that have come to nothing. I have a fear of future regret in the life I might live. I desire adventure, challenge, confidence, courage, accomplishment and a story to tell!

I'm going into Media Ops. I'll have the opportunity to train as a graphics specialist, combat photographer, reporter and combat motion media photographer. Pretty cool huh? I've been spending the past few years working at a church and not really doing much with my talent. Here's my chance to do something and be what I've always wanted. That was the big selling point for me. You see I won't be getting off course of what I'm wanting to do or the career I've already chosen. I'm just building on it. What's 5 years in life? The amount of time I've been in St. Joseph? Think of what I could accomplish in that time.

I'm sure we're thinking about Iraq right about now. Well, so am I and I'm very aware that this path might lead me there, and a big part of me hopes so. That's where the story is after all. I say that all 'gun-ho' like, but I'm not saying it flippantly. I might be going in for media, but I'm very aware that I'd be a Marine foremost. It's just a responsibility and duty I'm willing to take. I believe the armed forces are some of the most honorable and courageous men and women out there and I'd be proud to wear that uniform and call myself one of them.

And too the friends I'll be leaving behind... you have no idea how hard this is going to be for me. You have no idea how hard this next few months is going to be. The last time I'll live with you. And eat Cheddar's with you. Starbucks, church, movies late at night, hanging out, and always being available. I love you, I'll miss you, but I want you to know that I'll always be your friend.

Unfortunately I know how hard long emails are to read, so I'll try to keep you guys updated on my summer and everything going on in my life. I already have a couple blogs in mind to write; to release some thoughts.

About 4 minutes ago the last pitch was fired past the final Pirates batter of the series. Rockies swept the series and looked good doing it. Manny Corpas finished all three games out for us. Keep in mind that last road trip where we went 1-9 with 3 blown saves in a week by the All-Star Brian Fuentes. Todd and Brad homered today. And Jeff pitched a fantastic game! If our starting pitching keeps its consistency (Josh pitched great yesterday too!) then we might be able to string a run at the division together!

Tomorrow night we will be in DC to take on the woebegone Nationals. Hopefully we can take at least 3 of the 4, if not sweep. If we can take 3 of those games we will return to the Mile High City winning 7 out of 10 and ready for a nice productive homestand against the battling divison leaders - the Padres and the Dodgers. It could be a great week for us next week!

If we can produce and perhaps (dare I dream) take both of those home series, we will be in a solid place to battle for 2nd in the division! Rockies, you have my hopes and dreams raised, please don't hurt my heart!

UPDATE: Good morning, now I will blog a little. This was a fun past few days. I enjoy all three of the Mets games with good groups of friends. I got to spend some time with some people who I hadn't seen in a while. Including running into a guy who I knew in youth group 6 years ago and hadn't seen in at least 4! This is why I love baseball. It is just fun. It is innocent. It is family.

The fireworks after the games were amazing. (I can't lie, I got teary-eyed watching the 'bombs bursting in air' while listening to Lee Greenwood 'Bless the USA') However the fireworks during the game was what pleased me the most. We absolutely hammered the Mets! We hit anything that they threw at us! We outscored the Mets 34-12 over 3 games. If you include the Yanks trouncing, we have beaten New York teams 47-17 in the past two weeks! (CBS has the recap)

Could we be a playoff contending team? Yes. I honestly believe we could, BUT I want to see us go out in the next 3 weeks and get an actual marquee starting pitcher who can rally us and provide us the consistency that we will need to make a serious playoff run. It can happen. It feels good to watch us win 3, but we absolutely cannot have another road trip like that one. Cannot!

It was a blast. There were a bunch of cameras, so if pics come my way I will let you know. And, yes, I know that I have been blogging about the Rockies a lot lately, but so be it!

Jason Hirsh actually outpitched the great Tom Glavine last night. He out hit him too (which is a surprise because Hirsh came in with a .038 avg. and Glavine .310.) It was a good game. Jason pitched great through 6, then hurt his ankle on third base while avoiding getting picked off. He will miss at least one start, I am sure. Matt had a 3-run dinger to cap a 6 run 3rd. Good game.

Also, I sat in the Rockpile for the first time. It was awesome! Tons of great people, great view and perfect weather all added up to a great experience for $4. I highly recommend enjoying at least a game or two from the 400 section behind the fountains!

The only thing that I USED to disagree with was most Rockies fans' dislike of Clint. However, after this past stint, I am now calling for his job!

This season is shaping up as the worst the Rockies possibly could have had, given the circumstances. They're not going to be bad enough to secure a dazzlingly high draft pick, and their one period playing above their heads coincided with the Yankees series, allowing ownership to continue promoting illusory progress and line their pockets with fat revenue sharing dollars. The Monforts might even be able to get away with not firing Clint Hurdle and Dan O'Dowd even though the team is going to miss the playoffs for the 12th consecutive year. That means we might as well write off 2008 as well, since Hurdle and O'Dowd have already received their extensions and the Monforts are not the sort of owners to pay four people to perform two jobs. Hurdle... well, I think he might well be a really nice guy, maybe one of the nicer managers in the game, certainly nicer than Jim Leyland, but he's a loser. Come on. His complete lack of leadership during this recent skin-crawling stretch of horrible play is pretty damning. "It's been bizarre, quirky, any word you want to use," the Post quotes the skipper. "I said eight days ago that our confidence is probably at a peak. So what's changed? Is our talent level any different? This is our most traumatic test so far, but we'll pass it." Uh... pass it how? All that's left for the Rockies this season is to play out the string, again, and it would be nice to hear one person in the organization take some responsibility. This aw-shucks, sometimes-you-eat-the-bear-and-sometimes-the-bear-eats-you tone the players and management are taking is loser talk.

I agree with this assessment of Clint. I am so tired of listening to his crap about losing being alright. It is NOT ok. I want a manager who gets pissed when they lose. I want a manager who will get tossed out of a game. Who will motivate SOMEONE! Who has the edge necessary to do SOMETHING different when we lose game after game on the road. We have to win ballgames. We have the talent, we have the ability (we have the best defense in baseball and an offense that CAN be good, when they want to be.) Granted, our pitching is atrocious, but out starting staff has been pitching above and beyond themselves all year so far.

All I can say, is that I am glad that I grew up a Cubs fan, because I think it acclimated me well to just living with a team that can't and won't win... ever. Rockies come on.

Softball is Amazing

Yep, this is what you get when you slide into third while wearing shorts. (I am kind of an idiot.)

Last night was a night of contrasts. In the Jaguars game (all men) we absolutely dominated. First inning we put up 20 runs. I had 3 hits in the first inning and scored all three times. The biggest one being my first hit. I took the second pitch that was thrown and drilled it over the left center field wall. Dinger! This was my first home fun over a fence, ever! It was exciting. It happened kind of quickly. I was already rounding second before I realized that it was gone. I hit it well, hopefully I can keep that kind of power going for the rest of the summer. I ended up going 5 for 5 over the evening, as we cruised to a 31-10 win.

The contrasting event was the Wild Aces game. We got dominated. Hard. The final score ended up at 27-4. It was a touch brutal. We still played hard and we had some fun. It would be nice for us to get some hits and make some stuff happen offensively to give us a sense of confidence. I will take a look at the lineup and see what we can do.

All in all it was a fun night. The Rockies got dominated in Houston. Now they are returning home for a while. I will attending all three Mets games this week starting tonight. It should be good. My heart hurts from this past road trip, but I still believe in my guys. It will be fun.

So I blogged on Monday about the disappointing pattern of the Rockies coming from behind in dramatic fashion fueled by a late-inning Tulow dinger and then Brian Fuentes coming in and failing to close the game out for us.

Friday night in Toronto - Tulow 2-run shot to put us up 6-4. Fuentes blows the save.

Monday night in Chicago - Tulow 3-run shot to cap a six run ninth that put us up 9-8. Fuentes blows the save.

So last night, I am at Buffalo Wild Wings where you will find me every Wing Thursday (boneless = $.50) and am watching my Rockies falter away a lead this time. Cook pitched alright. And it was enjoyable watching Biggio get his 3,000th. So the game goes extra innings. Then comes the 11th. Tulow gets up and I get excited. Sure enough, doink, solo shot to put us up 5-4. I am now very excited and am watching Brian come in from the outfield to close this one. (Surely there is no way that he will blow 3 saves IN A ROW! IN CLOSE GAMES!)

Guess what? He loaded the bases and gives up a walk-off grand slam to Carlos Lee.

Hey Clint, just a suggestion. Maybe we let someone else have the ball in actual save situations. I know that we pay Brian out the butt to come in and lose close games for us, but I am getting a little tired of it. Brian, you are continually breaking my heart.

On Friday night in the top of the 10th inning in Toronto, Tulow hit a two-run shot to deep left center. This put the Rockies on top. In comes Brian Fuentes to blow the save (his 3rd blown save of the year.) And we drop the first of three to the Blue Jays.

Tonight, in the top of the 9th. The boys start the inning down 8-3 and proceed to put 6 up and take the lead. Aided by a 3 run shot by, yep, Tulow. In comes Brian Fuentes to, yep, blow another save.

For some reason I thought we had one of the best closers in the National League. Apparently, I was mistaken. Brian, you have broken my heart twice now in 4 games. Please stop that.

My Rockies seem to always lead me into heart-breaking and difficult situations. Last week was the peak of the season for me so far. The almighty Yankees came into town and in front of over 147,000 people in 3 games managed to eek out only 5 runs as my Rockies swept the home series. This was a pinnacle. Tons of people saw how good the Rockies have been playing recently. I had some clout now to say that Rockies baseball was competitive and exciting to watch and follow. My friends began to pay attention to them and a couple were even interesting in heading with me down the the park. My office had very little to chide me about as I faithfully place another 'W' on my Rockies sheet hung proudly on my cubicle wall.

Then we went to Toronto. Yep, those are my Rockies. We got shellacked. Thrice. Pitching sucked. We couldn't hit. Tulow was good. Brian Fuentes blew another save (3rd this year.) We were three outs away from walking away hitless. Now we are back at 5 and a half out of the lead of the division. We are still alright, but I am sitting here wondering . . .

Will we do what it takes to take the division? Namely, acquire someone who resembles a starting pitcher. Right now, with the exception of Francis and sometimes Cook, we have a starting lineup that consists of men who would be pleased coming out the bullpen in middle relief for most teams in baseball. It is not the caliber of pitching staff that will see us through to a game in October. I hope that we will.

But for now let's remember that we are the best defensive team in all of baseball. That is a good thing. Someone said that defense wins championships. Not in baseball. Pitching does.

Simple Way House Fire

Please read this. I have blogged about the Irresistible Revolution, as has Josh Mick. It is a book by Shaine Claiborne who helped start The Simple Way which is a movement in Philly. It is communal experiment of sorts and does a lot of good for the people who are connected to it. This is from their home page this morning.

This morning, a 7-alarm fire consumed an abandoned warehouse in our Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia. The Simple Way Community Center at 3200 Potter Street was destroyed as well as at least eight of our neighbors’ homes. Over 100 people were evacuated from their homes, and 400 families are currently without power. Despite this developing tragedy, we are incredibly thankful to share that all of our community members and every one of our neighbors is safely out of harm’s way.

This fire will forever change the fabric of our community. Eight families are currently homeless, and in many cases have lost their vehicles as well as their homes. One of our neighbors, the Mahaias Family, lost their three cars as well as the equipment one family member uses for her massage therapy business. Teenager Brian Mahaias is devastated not because he has lost his belongings, but because he fears that this fire will force him to move away from this neighborhood that is his family as well as his home.

The Simple Way has lost a community center that was home to our Yes! And… afterschool program, community arts center, and Cottage Printworks t-shirt micro-business as well as to two of our community members. Community members Shane Claiborne and Jesce Walz have lost all of their belongings, Yes! And…’s after school studio and library were ruined, and community member Justin Donner’s Cottage Printworks equipment and t-shirts were destroyed.

We are thankful that we are able to help each other during this time of need, and we will continue to keep your informed about today’s events.

We have established funds to support the families who have lost their homes, the Yes! And… afterschool program, and the Simple Way community.

A 50-ton bowhead whale caught off the Alaskan coast last month had a weapon fragment embedded in its neck that showed it survived a similar hunt - more than a century ago.
Embedded deep under its blubber was a 3 1/2-inch arrow-shaped projectile that has given researchers insight into the whale's age, estimated between 115 and 130 years old.

"No other finding has been this precise," said John Bockstoce, an adjunct curator of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Calculating a whale's age can be difficult, and is usually gauged by amino acids in the eye lenses. It's rare to find one that has lived more than a century, but experts say the oldest were close to 200 years old.

The bomb lance fragment, lodged in a bone between the whale's neck and shoulder blade, was likely manufactured in New Bedford, on the southeast coast of Massachusetts, a major whaling center at that time, Bockstoce said.

It was probably shot at the whale from a heavy shoulder gun around 1890. The small metal cylinder was filled with explosives fitted with a time-delay fuse so it would explode seconds after it was shot into the whale. The bomb lance was meant to kill the whale immediately and prevent it from escaping.

The device exploded and probably injured the whale, Bockstoce said.

"It probably hurt the whale, or annoyed him, but it hit him in a non-lethal place," he said. "He couldn't have been that bothered if he lived for another 100 years."
