This morning President Bush annouced his nomination for director of the CIA, General Michael Hayden. Many people like this decision, a few despise it.
Some people see it as an aggressive move by an overzealous administration attempting to allow the military to take over our country. However, I cannot think of a more appropriate time for a seasoned military leader to take leadership of one of the finest intelligence agencies in the world. We are at war. We are facing multiple enemies on multiple fronts. Intelligence is crucial right now. We must have an agency that operates at the highest level and that is able to provide the best intelligence in the world. The time is critical for us to get it right on everything that we do as a nation on the international front. This is a good appointee.
The other question has to do with the wire tap question. As you may know, General Hayden was on of the pointmen for the NSA wiretapping program utilized by President Bush. This nomination by the president and subsequent threats by people such as Senator Arlen Specter to use this nomination and the ensuing confirmation hearings to delve deeper into the wiretap program, indicates to me that the president knows exactly what he is doing. It doesn't look like he is the least bit hesitant about bringing any of the wiretap business into the public eye. The president looks confident with this nomination. That is a good thing.
